Why Guatemala?

Why Guatemala?

Just wanted to quickly jump on here and briefly talk about Guatemala, the source of all these beautiful home decor products.

I was an international development student at the University of Ottawa, and dismayed by the theoretically heavy material that consumed the first two years of uni I decided to go out in the "field" myself and volunteer/intern at NGO's where I can get a glimpse into the world that I was after.

I first travelled to Peru during the first months of my summer break between second and third year of university. I loved my experience and wanted to see where else I could go to expand my real life experiences. Guatemala was the next destination, and the last to date as it brought about many life changes!

I stayed for 6 months in Guatemala the first time I went to visit, which was an extended trip from an originally 2 month planned trip. I met a guy within the first couple of weeks and we spent every free time together and every working minute together, literally because he was my boss! more on that later hehe. Once I left Guatemala, this guy and I continued dating LONG DISTANCE so I could finish up my university studies, and low and behold we reunited the second I was done and I made the move down south.

We got married and started a family together and travelled about to so many different areas in the country. We explored, we had fun, and made lots of amazing memories along the way. I was very fond of all the textiles that are abundant in every corner of the country. It has a large Mayan population and many of whom are carrying on traditional forms of craftmanship for work, weaving being a notable one. It is culturally and historically significant which drew me in even more as the allure of their weaving process, dying methods, and cultural integrity left a lasting impression on my heart.

I have always curated my home and bedroom with pieces of furniture or decor that had meaning to it - usually from my travels to Europe to visit family, and later from tropical destinations among winter getaways. I loved to fuse together pieces that were either vintage, charming, culturally significant, handmade or painted, and antique. Well here I was in the homeland of the crafters and makers and I felt my heart being tugged at the idea of working together with an artisan or many to create unique pieces for the home.

So that is where we are! Having fun creating a shop that will highlight the beautiful products but as well the culture, the people and the country that has brought so much joy to our lives. It may have been on your radar before and we are here to impress it on your hearts for good!

Hasta luego amigos
